Compass W ellne ss NEW YOU Miami Spa Month — which is actually two months running from July 1-Aug. 31 — was created as a time to de-stress and rejuvenate. With that in mind, we asked Carillon Hotel & Spa Medical Director Dr. Karen Koffler, M.D., for her favorite options. CO M P I L E D B Y SA N DY L I N D S E Y JUICE SIPS “Treat your skin while treating your tastebuds. Green Goddess juice is made with nourishing ingredients like apple, kale, cucumber, romaine and lime. It helps in supporting your immune system, lowering sugar and carbohydrates and leaving your skin hydrated with the summer glow you’ve been looking for.” VITALIC FACIAL “This is a highly effective facial designed to refine and brighten complexion by using a light peel of lactic and salicylic acids and potent Vitamin C. Your skin will be more hydrated and quenched, giving you an even, radiant look.” SKIN SAVVY Summer season brings longer days, meaning more daylight and more time for the sun to create damage. Your skin is the one organ that receives daily injury; however, you can help repair the injury related to the sun. Limiting exposure is important. This can be done with rash guards (recommended Bloq UV) and sunscreens that rely primarily on zinc or titanium oxide. Choose products free of chemical carcinogens including oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate and fragrance. Also, avoid sprays so you don’t inhale the particles. What’s more, the way you eat and drink affects your ability to nourish skin from the inside out. Hydration is key. For a twist, stay hydrated with coconut water. Antioxidants including Vitamins C and E will work hard to repair sun damage and strengthen skin. Eating foods rich in these nutrients, mainly fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, will give you a solid start. Supplements can also help. Moreover, fats are important for skin. Coconut Oil, rich in caprylic and lauric acid, is a fantastic moisturizer, while Ghee and Omega 3 Fats are good for their anti-inflammatory activity. Bone broth made from chicken or beef has the highest concentration of the nutrients needed for the skin. It is rich in amino acids that build collagen, keeping the skin more youthful. STAYCATION TIME “Take a break from the hustle and bustle with a staycation at a magnificent all-encompassing property right in your own backyard. Experience a day full of luxury at Carillon Hotel & Spa with over 40 fitness classes, the largest spa in South Florida, the most comprehensive model for health optimization and a beautiful beach just footsteps away.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. M.D., is › Director Karen at Koffler, Carillon Hotel the & Medical The Spa, overseeing the expansive medical wellness center at the resort.
