Stretch marks are a common skin condition
that can cause embarrassment and distress
for many women. Sometimes no matter what
you do, they are completely unavoidable.
The degree of severity varies according
to various factors, but the fact remains
that they are almost always noticeable
and unsightly. The exact cause of stretch
marks is unknown but they are frequently
seen after a period of rapid growth during
adolescence, with pregnancy, obesity, and
with rapid increase or decrease in weight.
Initially stretch marks are red and slightly
raised. With time they become white, flat
and depressed. There have been a variety
of creams and lasers that have been used
to treat stretch marks with variable and
often minimal improvement. However
recent studies have shown that treatments
done with fractionated non-ablative
laser resurfacing can be very effective in
improving the appearance of stretch marks.
These treatments are done with topical
anesthesia in about 15 minutes. There’s
typically some mild redness for 1-2 days
afterwards. Three to four treatments are
recommended for maximum improvement.
