Success F l a shback TIME CRUISE A decade before the decadent district known as Little Havana mambo’d into existence; the area surrounding Calle Ocho was known as Riverside, as pictured below in 1951. Originally a lower middle-class Jewish neighborhood catering to those involved in our city’s post-war boom, the influx of Cuban immigrants that helped put our magical municipality on the map affected no area as much as the avenue pictured below, indelibly associating it with the keen cultural makeup of our country’s closest Caribbean neighbor. Of particular note in both images is the proud placement of Tower Theatre, an enduring monument to Miami’s devotion to cultural institutions; HistoryMiami.org. — RYA N JA R R E LL Before: Archival Photo courtesy of HistoryMiami; After: Photo courtesy of Marcelo Araica 60
