This skin is the thinnest on the body, and will often become loose and wrinkled at a younger age. In the upper lids, the skin may start to fall over the lashes, which is called “hooding.” To improve the appearance of the lid, a blepharoplasty is performed. This is a surgery where the excess skin and occasionally some underlying fat are excised. The incision is made in the lid crease, so that little or no post-operative scarring is evident. Most patients will have some bruising and swelling for about 1-2 weeks. In addition to the redundant skin, some people may a true ptosis, which is where the muscle that opens the eyelid, the levator, is stretched causing the lid height to fall. In these patients, the levator muscle can be tightened at the same time as the skin excision to elevate the lid height. While surgery can remove the redundant skin, some patients will also benefit from laser resurfacing of the skin to tighten the upper eyelid, and help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This can be done at the same time as the blepharoplasty. Dr. John J. We’re talking about heat exhaustion and deadly heat stroke. To keep yourself safe, follow these important tips all season long: 34 Thirst Factor Cover Up Buddy System Even if you’re not going for a run, being outside in the heat causes your body to lose fluids. Be sure to replenish them by drinking extra water. Avoid beverages with alcohol, caffeine and high sugar content. Sunburn severely inhibits your body’s ability to cool down. Protect yourself with a broad spectrum sunblock and, if appropriate, wear a wide-brimmed hat or lightweight, light-colored clothes that cover your skin. If you do need to work or exercise outside, be sure to have a friend with you. Monitor each other for signs of dizziness, exhaustion or confusion, which may indicate advanced heat stroke, a very dangerous condition.
