Success A L a M o de INTERMIX & MATCH Fashion masterminds Khajak & Haro Keledjian co-founded the first Intermix 22 years ago. Today, the company boasts stores in 30 major cities, 15 states and 2 countries. And now, with the reopening of the Bal Harbour boutique after a major revampnovation (that’s revamp + renovation), Khajak shares the recipe that makes his brand some kind of wonderful. T E X T BY F R A N CE S C A C R UZ It was at the apex of The Grunge Era that Intermix was created after the concept of “creating recipes not just selling ingredients.” As such, the store curates a tight edit of styles and trends that incorporate emerging as well as established designers, essentially “inter-mixing” them under one roof and offering that mélange to their devotees. The first store opened its doors in 1993 on the illustrious (think Monopoly) Fifth Avenue in NYC. Today, Intermix is at the forefront of all that is dernier cri, and it’s a fashion force to be reckoned with. The Bal Harbour flagship store has been renovated from head-to-toe (pun intended) and the ladies-who-lunch are clamoring, in well-attired droves, to the store. The brothers have certainly done their homework and Co-Founder Khajak Keledjian is proud to share their secret to success: “Over the years, we’ve watched where our clients shop, and then we open there — we like to be in their neighborhood, a regular stop when they walk by on the way home or on the weekend,” he says. For 22 years and counting, that’s exactly what their loyal following has done, and continues to do; 9700 Collins Ave., Ste. 257, Bal Harbour Shops; IntermixOnline.com. 48
