Success D r i v e PLUG-IN PORSCHE Since 1948, Porsches have been converting gasoline into adrenalin-pumping, glorious noise. The adrenalin remains, but soon there will be a ghostly-quiet yet unbelievably fast Porsche that will never need to stop at a gas pump. TEXT BY BILL LINDSEY Now that Porsche’s 918 Spyder, an asphalt-shredding supercar that gets 67 miles per gallon, has proven hybrid cars don’t have to be ugly econoboxes, the Porsche’s Mission E concept car is reinventing electric cars. Powered by a 600 hp electric motor, the Mission E looks like a Panamera that has been restyled by NASA. The performance is rocket-quality, owing to the fact that electric motors deliver 100% of their torque instantly, launching the car from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds. The 4-seat sedan’s batteries allow a range of about 300 miles, recharging to 80% in just 15 minutes, making it practical for road trips. While it’s still in the conceptual stage, the Mission E looks very close to road-ready. Here’s some trivia that few Porschephiles know: the Mission E is not the first all-electric Porsche.
